Collection: Maxillaria Orchids
Maxillaria is one of the largest orchid genera in tropical America, ranging from big clumping plants to mat-forming miniatures. The Brazilian species we grow are among the most tolerant orchids in the collection: they accept cool winters, flower freely and are a good fit for growers in southern Australia.

Names in Maxillaria have shifted repeatedly as botanists have split and re-merged the genus, so you may see these species sold under Brasiliorchis, Christensonella or older Maxillaria names. Each listing uses the name currently accepted by Kew, with synonyms noted.
What to expect
Flowers are borne singly on short stems from the base of the pseudobulbs, often many at once on a mature plant, and some are fragrant. Plants are compact and forgiving of the occasional missed watering.
Care notes
Bright filtered light, regular water in the growing season and a slightly drier, cooler winter suit most species. See the Maxillaria Orchid Care Guide and Growing Brazilian Maxillaria in Australia.
